The Pirates old-timers were unbeaten and unscored upon at the annual fantasy camp in Bradenton, Fla., former pitcher Steve Blass was happy to report. "Our stories, statistics and careers were better than ever, but the darn Internet killed us because it told the truth," said Blass, currently a Pirates broadcaster. Eighty-three fans attended at the annual event, which concluded on Sunday. Seven members of the 1960 World Series championship team also were among those on hand. According to several participants, the kangaroo court that Blass presided over was the highlight of the week. "It they breathed, we fined them," Blass said. "The first morning I got up there and said, 'Guys, raise your hands if you called home to check on your wife and things.' A lot of them did, and I said, 'That's a dollar each, because we're here to play ball and drink beer.' "Then I said, 'All right, which of you guys didn't call home?' The others raised their hands, and I said, 'Well, that's a dollar, too, because you don't care about your family.' That kind of set the tone." |
