Pirates NotesKids Will Play in Grapefruit League Opener

BRADENTON -- Thirty players will make the trip to Tampa today, when the team opens Grapefruit League play against the New York Yankees at Steinbrenner Field. Maholm will oppose Chad Gaudin in the preseason opener for both teams. The MLB Network will televise the game, which has a 1:05 p.m. start. "As we go through spring training, we'll get the guys that we know will go north with us ready, but we'll give our younger players a chance to get out there," manager John Russell said after a benefit game against the State College of Florida Manatees on Tuesday afternoon. The roster includes catchers Luke Carlin, Ryan Doumit, Hector Giminez and Erik Kratz; infielders Pedro Alvarez, Doug Bernier Ronny Cedeno, Jeff Clement, Argenis Diaz, Brian Friday, Akinori Iwamura, Andy LaRoche, Steve Pearce, Neil Walker and Delwyn Young; outfielders Ryan Church, Gorkys Hernandez, Garrett Jones, Andrew McCutchen, Lastings Milledge, John Raynor and Jose Tabata; and pitchers Maholm, Brian Bass, D.J. Carrasco, Chris Jakubauskas, Steven Jackson, Ross Ohlendorf, Jack Taschner and Jean Machi. SIGNED AND SEALED: The team announced that 28 players had been signed to one-year contracts. The list included catcher Jason Jaramillo, infielders Jeff Clement, Argenis Diaz, Andy LaRoche, Steve Pearce, Neil Walker and Delwyn Young; outfielders Gorkys Hernandez, Brandon Jones, Garrett Jones, Andrew McCutchen, Lastings Milledge, Brandon Moss, John Raynor and Jose Tabata; and pitchers Ramon Aguero, Jose Ascanio, Joel Hanrahan, Kevin Hart, Chris Jakubauskas, Brad Lincoln, Daniel McCutchen, Evan Meek, Bryan Morris, Charlie Morton, Ross Ohlendorf, Ronald Uviedo and Donnie Veal. DECENT EXPOSURE: Fox Sports Pittsburgh will broadcast four Grapefruit League games this spring. The dates, opponents and times: Wednesday, March 10, Baltimore Orioles, 7:05 p.m.; Sunday, March 14, New York Yankees, 1:05 p.m. (tape delay); Sunday, March 21, Tampa Bay Rays, 1:05 p.m.; Friday, April 2, Philadelphia Phillies, 7:05 p.m. Either WBGG (970 AM) or WPGB-FM (104.7 FM) will carry all except two split-squad games on radio. NEW DIGS: The players got their first glimpses of the renovated clubhouse at McKechnie Field, which featured a new carpet, kitchen and expanded dining area among other improvements. |
