Pirates Talk
clement and Jones
Jones appears to be the real deal, I know it has only been 2 months but he is showing an ability to adjust to off speed pitches and curve balls. It appears AAA managers have figured out Clements weakness. His average has dropped 40 points in the past 3 weeks. The question is can he adjust and how are they pitching him differently?

Not Jones' fault if no runners are on board when he hits one out. Not certain how Dunn would change that significantly. Keep in mind, this is the kids first real major league experience, teams have seen him more than once and he is still hitting at a consistant rate. Maybe, just maybe the Pirates got lucky for once when they picked him up.

MAYBE just maybe he's pressing because he's trying to hard to succeed and do us fans a favor giving us something to root for. I could go forever but my fingers hurt I don't post

I have been reading posts from this site all season and finally decided to put my two cents in. I'm a optomistic person but I can also understand the frustration. I really hate the posts by serg because he just complains to complain but everyone gives him fuel by reacting just like I am now. It seems like he and lancem just want complain even starting negative posts to get other people riled up, but serg's most recent post might make the most sense of all the posts I have seen on here. Most people blindly believe the pirates will improve magically and the other end people like serg believe they will never succeed. There has to be a middle belief an optomistic but realistic belief and for someone that doesn't agree with anything the pirates do defends someone that has been one of the few bright spots this year should say something. I would love to see the percentages of at bats with risp and without. And even if it shows his avg ***** with risp give jones a little slack

Just found the stats for batting average with runners in scoring position. Jones is hitting .174 with RISP and only three Pirates have lower averages - Bixler, Cruz, and Walker. Until he corrects that hole in his game, he shouldn't be in the middle of the order - he can hit a solo home run anywhere in the lineup.

McCutchen won't be batting first the rest of his career, that's for sure. He'll follow Bonds' career path and move down in the order eventually. As for Jones batting first, where else would you bat someone who can't hit with runners in scoring position? Might as well get him as manby abs as possible with the bases empty. As far as the dumbest comment ever... you should read what you've written

I'm not saying Jones shouldn't be playing but you don't need someone who can't hit with runners on shouldn't be third. A more logical lineup is Jones at leadoff and McCutcheon third no matter how unorhodox it sounds.

On a team that struggles with power 19 home runs are 19 home runs runners on or not. I believe he will improve on this. He seems to be staying pretty consistant. Clement tried to play for about 2 weeks with a rib cage injury so his numbers at Indy are a little misleading.

YOu are correct about first base needs to produce RBI. Not certatin if Jones tightens up or not with others on board, but in only 2 months he leads the team in HRs. If they continue believing in Doumit he probably bats 4th, and I see Jones at 5.

I think a bigger question about Jones is where he bats - he seems to have a problem with runners in scoring position. Batting behind two batters who are hitting in the .270s and he only has 38 rbis with 19 homers - he's only driven in 19 runs that weren't himself in two months!!! That isn't impressive and, if he doesn't fix that, there's no reason to worry about where he plays. It seems Clement has been hurt a lot so hopefully a healthy season in winter ball will tell us something. First base needs to be an rbi position.

Knowing the Pirate organization, I think he sees time at first base primarily but he will also see some time in right field. As of this point in time, Pierce does not appear to be making a case as the regular at first base.
