there is no doubt that the pirates need offense, they also need a quality lefthander in the bullpen, but in the real world does anyone believe the pirates will spend millions on quality players?

BOB, FRANK and NEIL address the hitting situation during the offseason and i think this team will start winning alot quicker than most people think.

it was the pirates who made such a big deal about signing sano.their own scout called him the best he has seen and it was huntington who said he was important to sign.some who post here drank the kool-aid the pirates offered.

Capps - I am a firm believer that the chances are very difficult for a hard throwing closer to rebound from a dismal season. The arm strength and mechanics cannot be revived. By contrast, I much rather develop another promising prospect. If you leave Capps on the roster, cancer will spread. It can be mentally challenging on the entire team and the organization for that matter to be winning on a regular basis heading to the 9th only to see your closer get rocked and lose the game. Even when Capps does have a successful night, he is always flirting with trouble as he allows men to get on base.

Sano - The Pirates never had him. So one cannot say the Pirates lost him. The Dominican has a large amount of prospects that are taking steroids and lie about their age. That being said, if I invest big dollars in an unproven prospect, I rather invest in a player raised in the continental United States. As much as the fans want to think that the Pirates have an unlimited budget, they do not. Every baseball decision has to be correct or it could be "doomsday" for the Pirates.

Ummm, Capps has been pretty reliable to blow saves... and at 10%, it would be 3 games (at most). I think he'll work hard in the offseason though, and get back to his old form. Being in the top 200 career saves leaders, AS A PIRATE, at the age of 25, I think he is definitely capable of being a shut-down closer.

Arizona Bruce said "The Pirates secure 8 of those wins next season just by making sure Capps is not on the roster." Bruce, while I get you overall point, ii isn't that cut-and-dried. Even the best, most expensive closers blow 10% of their save opportunities. Plus, it's not uncommon for even an elite closer to struggle in non-save situation. You need to cut those 8 extra wins in half, if Capps isn't the 2010 closer, and the Pirates get lucky landing or developing one.

buc4life i said they would be lucky if they can sign uggla for 6 mllion a year.where do i compare sano with a proven player,i'm just repeating what the pirates own scout has said about him and how everyone was making such a big deal about him.what i said and i guess you must of misunderstood was the pirates and a whole lot of people who post herehave talked how important signing sano will be.they wouldn't up their offer and lost him, would they pay players like ankiel or beltran millions when for the last two year they have been stockpiling minor league players they hope will be their future.players like tabata, clement, alverez hernedez, walker, young, jones.something must be blocking you mind reading skills because i think if they are very lucky the can start making a run at 500 by 2011.

If i was a owner who was in desperate need of offense, and could get a guy with a proven mlb track record of hitting 30hr's a year and knocking in 90 runs+ for 6 million a year, then i would have the contract already written up.To compare a 16 year old boy{Sano} to a proven mlb star is not even worth commenting.Apparently you feel all they need is Alvarez and all the problems are solved, which is fine.I read in another one of your messages about Beltran, isn't he gonna cost dollars? If you want something for nothing,Milton Bradley is in trouble again and the cubs would be more than happy to unload him.As i stated before, {Alvarez}management was unhappy with his conditioning when he reported to spring training. We are paying seldom used Ramon Vazquez 4 million for 2 years. Do you know of any free agent who wouldn't want a multiyear deal?

did you see alverez play this year either at the world cup or in AA,he didn't look out of shape.uggla's numbers are why he will want at least 3 years and more than 6 million a year.ankiel is still young enough to want a multiyear deal.the pirates would not up their offer 500,000 dollars to sign what their own scout says is the next best player to come out of latin america, sano.will they pay millions when they wouldn't pay thousands?

Beginning of the season, they were upset with Alvarez for reporting way over weight. As for as paying free agents, wasn't Adam Laroche getting 8 million, Jack and Freddy around 6 or 7 million each.Ankiel is getting 3 million and since he is having a off year, probably won't ask for much more.Hasn't Uggla banged out 30hr's the last 3 years.Young has done nothing this monthto secure the second base position.Would not be surprised to see Laroche there next year.I think Alvarez is going to be a very good player for us, but i also think we need alot more punch in the lineup.18 times we were shut out this season!!

buc4life no way the pirates can afford dan uggla.he won his arbitration hearing last year and got a raise to 5.35 million dollars and he is having the same kind of year this year.its going to cost them 3 years and if they are lucky 18 million.ankiel has some baggage ,he admitted to using hgh.money wise he is going to want a multiyear contract,do you really think the pirates will offer that? have you seen alverez play this year because if he is out of shape maybe all the pirates should get out of shape like him.

I mentioned Rick Ankiel and some others mentioned Dan Uggla. Together there salaries are within range for the bucs, since we unloaded millions in salaries. It's necassary to get hr's and rbi production in the lineup.Milledge has busted his butt and currently one of the hottest hitters in baseball. But his hr's and rbi's have been not what management was looking for. Moss just hasn't done the job with the bat.I think Jones will start the season at first so we need some sock in right and left field.Laroche has secondbaseman numbers.Need some more power at third, hopefully Alvarez will be in shape this spring.I hope at the winter meetings the revenue sharing is greatly increased,it's long overdue.

In other news, how about those 1 and 2 Stillers eh?? Won a Super Bowl got complacent, did nothing to bolster a pitful Offensive line, the the team won the championship in spite of, the teams best defensive player gets hurt in the first game and the D can't stop Carson Freakin' Palmer and the Bungles. Way to go Mr. Rooney, ruined a perfect organization, going on the cheap with O-Line. Jerk!!! How's that Serg

that is why arbritation and not free agency is the worse thing to happen to baseball.how about some of these players who came over to the pirates who had good years and would be the stars of this years team. bob walk, don slaught, zane smith, ed sprague, ken lofton, reggie sanders, julian tavarez, jose mesa, matt lawton, xavier nady, kevin young.you are right there are players like drek bell and george hendrick who were failures but that has happened with all teams. some work and some fail.

Lancem, Do you think a player with 3 years of great MLB statistics will ask for more or less than the same player with only 1 year of great MLB statisitcs? Who cares how the team finished? The only thing that matters at this time is if the Pirates contended to make the playoffs or not. Ten to fifteen additional wins means nothing. If anything it works against the team. Now the organization will have more draft selection flexibility. The Pirates secure 8 of those wins next season just by making sure Capps is not on the roster. Since free agency began, how many high salaried pick-ups and/or late season trades have truly made an impact on the team? Madlock is one that comes to mind. Please help me out with the others vs. how many were busts? We Are Family!

management should be embarrassed since they were the ones after the trading deadline said this years team will not play as bad as last years team did in aug. and sept.they have played worse.you can not take anything away from the world cup. alverez hit three homeruns in one game in this tournament also.all you have to do is look at 2007 world cup.by those numbers laroche should be the star 3rd basemen and longoria should be hanging by a thread.

It is obvious over this last season that none of us knows what the mgt. is going to do. As I said before I think that mgt. is embarrased with what is happening and I believe that they will try to add some bats to this lineup and some pitching especially bullpen. Obviously its going to be really tough to find good players to come here. After watching Pedro whiffing today against the Cuban team I just can't see him in the majors next year unless he is smoking at AAA.

arizonabruce thats not the way it is done.after 4 years the player is arbitration eligible.a player picks a number he thinks he is worth and the team picks a number they think he is worth.most experts think its the arbitration hearing that has really screwed up the salary structure of baseball.

The Pirates do not need to add a free agent until they are able to contend for the playoffs. That will not be next season. The core group of payers need to learn to do it together. This will harvest a championship type of bond. Management needs to commit moving forward that none of these core players leave the team via free agency in the future. BTW: If Alvarez has less years even with solid numbers in the MLB, his financial contract demands should be less. There is no question that if he does not turn out to be a MLB impact player, any chance of the Pirates making the playoffs in the next 6 seasons will be lost.
