Pirates Talk

So it seems John's been fired and all of his entries have been stricken from the record. I guess any photos will have to be altered by the NGB - the Nutting division of the KGB. Stalin would be proud. Let's see how long this entry stays up if it is indeed posted at all.

""The Braves got Penndelton when they had a young core{Glavine, Smoltz, Avery, C. Jones, A. Jones} to name a few in place.""

No, Joe. You have the pitchers right, but Chipper and Andruw Jones were still years away, when the Braves acquired Pendleton for the 1991 season.

This was the Braves usual starters, in 1991:

C - Greg Olson - Age 30 1B - Sid Bream - Age 30 2B - Jeff Treadway - Age 28 SS - Raphael Belliard - Age 29 3B - Terry Pendleton - Age 30 LF - Lonnie Smith - Age 35 CF - Ron Gant - Age 26 RF - David Justice - Age 25

The Braves jumped from 65-97 in 1990 to 94-68 in 1991, by adding Bream, Pendleton, Otis Nixon as a 4th outfielder, and a little maturation added to Glavine and Avery.

I think the Pirates should indeed sign free agents to replace the below average players that don't look like future above average players.

I would say those would be Moss and Cedeno.

Andy and DY should battle out the 2B spot. Andy should win that.

For outfield, I think if the Pirates sign Marlon Byrd, that would be a very good signing. He's been a very consistent player the last 3 years. He's a solid OPS+ 100.

Ankiel is a good second choice. He has more upside than Byrd probably, but also more bust possibility.

BTW, there's no evidence that Ankiel's been on "the juice". HGH has never been shown to increase muscle mass or strength like steroids. Also, Ankiel's HGH use was in 2004 while he was rehabbing from surgery, BEFORE he was even a hitter.

I would suggest trying to get JJ Hardy from the Brewers to replace Cedeno. Cedeno will never be more than a good backup player.

Nutting family fires John Perrotto. What a joke the Pirates have become. You finally find a place where you can vent frustrations of 17 years and what do the Nutts do? They are "going in anther direction." What's that mean? Could they be freeing up some money to go after a big $$$$ free agent. Forget it. The Pirates have become the joke of MLB. How can someone sugarcoat what happened last season and many before? If that's what the NUtts want, sell the team to somebody who can take the good with the bad. That's what they do as far as the players are concerned, although it has been more bad than good. And they expect fans to keep coming to PNC Park. Take away the bobble head nights, fireworks, rock bands, whatever promotions they come up with and what you get is one big, bad joke.

jamminjoe you can say that now but back in 2003 and 2004 i bet nobody thought the tigers had a 'impressive core of young players'and if you compare that core to the pirates of this year you will be surprise.the tigers went out and picked up more vet players than just rodriguez to make the run in 2006.for the braves chipper jones didn't come to the braves until 1995 and andruw jones in 1997,and again compare glavine, avery and smoltz from1990 to duke, onlendorf and maholm of this year, shocking.as for gant and justice the braves had them up and playing in the majors in 1988,1989 and 1990 when they were just like the pirates.we all know what happened to the braves 13 or 14 straight years in the playoffs.

I think Pendleton was so over rated it makes me sick they gift wrapped that MVP trophy for him just because the media did't like Bonds. He didn't come close to deserving it. I bet if you asked any pitcher from back then they would rather face Pendleton then Gant or Justice.

The Braves got Penndelton when they had a young core{Glavine, Smoltz, Avery, C. Jones, A. Jones} to name a few in place.

Detroit had an impressive young core in place also.

We don't!!!It's getting better, but not there yet.

The players we need to sign won't come here yet. That's reality. The players we can sign isn't going to help win a div. title PERIOD. That's the goal.

Lancem your right about later picks. That's what I've been saying. I would rather have that top 3 pick in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th & so on. They seem to be willing to draft & pay for those guys that slide because of bonus demands now. Let's hope that continue's

What kind of sadistic person would want these 95-loss seasons to continue? Haven't we suffered enough? Apparently, not, according to the timetable of Neal H., jammin' joe & others. I'll be in a nursing home by the time this things turns around - if it ever does. Of course, if Neal H gets a contract extension and Craig Hansen gets an OK to pitch, attaining 95 losses will be a cinch. Rodriguez came to Tigers after the 119-loss season. Terry Pendleton went to Atlanta after the Braves were floundering in last place with a young pitching staff that kept losing low-scoring games. Why should we want the Pirates to continue being nothing more than a feeder system for teams that really want to win and a repository for other teams to send their 2nd & 3rd tier prospects???

the players i listed in a past post are the type of players who play multiple positions who if the pirates do what you think they will do, keep their top prospects in the minors, can still help them and will not cost an arm or a leg.people are to worried about drafting high, there are many many many great players drafted with the 17th pick or lower and even drafted in later rounds.every team should try to win as many games as they can.

A couple of relief pitchers & maybe, maybe one bench player or 5 yr. minor league FA like Jones last year is all there going to sign & all they should sign this year. There not going to compete for a div. title next year. So there better off finishing with 95+ L's next year then to finish with roughly 85 L's & have top 3 pick instead of 15th pick.

It doesn't just help with the 1st round but in the other rounds also. It's painful to watch, but as a fan I want a shot at a div. title once or twice a decade then 4 or 5 .500 records a decade. The only way we can get the impact players it takes to do that is a bunch of top 5 picks or get lucky. I prefer some painful seasons & top 5 picks that come with it. Of course you can't blow those picks with Moskos for your pen or Bullington to be a 3rd or 4th starter.

the reality is if the pirates do it the way jamminjoe thinks they will, than they will have to sign free agents.the type of players they will go after will be in the mold of a jamey carroll, marlon byrd, gabe kapler or maybe an aubrey huff.hopefully they will look for relief pitching.pichers in the range they will pay will be kiko calero, trever miller or duaner sanchez.

Dan Uggla has been mentioned before about signing as a free agent,he has only played in the majors 4 years. you don't become a free agent until 6 years.he is arbitration eligible and won he hearing last year.if the pirates could trade for him that would be a good trade.

jamminjoe66
10-14-09 2:00 PM
Curse, Uggla & Ankel ain't coming here. Ankel hasn't done crap since he got off the juice. Would I sign them if I was in charge Uggla yes, Ankel only for a very low base salary & loaded with incentives. Which he won't do.

That's REALITY!!!!

we all know that the pirates are not going to spend money on free agents so the next best thing is to give their players of the future a chance to see what they can do and hopefully become a quality team by 2011 or 2012

player "come together" at 20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28 and so on.you don't know until you play them.alverez ,lincoln and tabata have to be given a chance to see what they can do in the majors,if they struggle they can be sent down,it has helped other players.jamminjoe how do you know how good any of the players in rookie ball or a ball or even aa that you say now makes the pirates a deeper farm system?have you seen everone of them play?or are you going by how someone like rated them.

Please! Please! Haven't we been tortured enough watching Andy LaR, Moss, Pearce? D Young seems to be a nice kid, but this 2B stuff ain't working. All these guys are doing is blocking us from getting a moderately-priced FA or a viable player in a trade who hasn't reached free agency. Name me one other NL team that Andy LaR & Moss could start for? Right, zero. Enough of these in-season experiments. If we had a Dan Uggla or a Rick Ankiel in the middle of the order to protect our young players, we might not win pennant, but we wouldn't go on any 3-23 skids! Thank goodness, only 353 days left on Neal H's contract.

Not to get off track, but I just watch an interview with LaMarr Woodley on dve**** & his comments about Mel Kipper was priceless. It touches on what we've talked about before {Lancem} Not to beat a dead horse but please take a look at it.

My point is some guys have it come together at 24 or 25 & some not until there 27 or 28.

It doesn't matter record wise if they bring up Tabata, Alverez & Lincoln at the start of the 2010 season they still won't compete for a div. title. So let them in AAA for a while & mature & improve on there weakness there & have control of them for another season later on in there careers, which also lets the guys you have up already some more at bats next year. Who knows something may just come together for 1 or 2 of them. They are at that age, LaRouche {26} Young {27} Cedeno {27} Moss {26}.

Freddie, Nate, Giles & Jones{maybe} were all 28 or older when they had it come together. You don't right of players at 25 or 26 who has potential to get it right.

whats the difference if they become free agents at 27 or 28.the 400 at bats that moss had this year or the 500+ at bats laroche had this year isn't enough?

lancem
10-14-09 6:10 AM
jamminjoe, giles was a platoon player in cleveland, they didn't think he could hit lefthanded pitching.it has nothing to do with any points your trying to make.jones, you are right the twins thought they had better players than he was.that is why he was a mionr league free agent, they didn't think very highly of him or they would have move him to the outfield.the only player who was stuck behind someone was sanchez who was a ss coming up.the red sox had a little player named garciaparra.
