Lancem: You must be more specific when caling someboy out. How am I wrong? I don't see it. I am saying that Overbay will turn out to be an expensive bust. I hope I am wrong. We will all know more in 4 months.

Overbay will not make a difference in how good the pirates are this year. It will be the pitching that will determine how well the pirates do this year. Arizona, how come every time, and its almost always, when you are proven wrong, you get defensive

I have no problems with Jones platooning in RF. Alvarez should be at first base. Overbay is a journeyman that generated very little interest above 3 million this season. That being said, why would the Pirates pay him more than 5 million? I smell a repeat situation of Aki. Hopefully I am wrong and he rips it up the first half of the season. This could secure the Pirates some future trade value.

The difference is Overbay is a proven major leaguer and no one else the Pirates could have put at first base would have been. For the major league average salary, he's an average major leaguer. Garret Jones is not a proven major leaguer, he had a good half a season and couldn't repeat it. I hope he does prove himself this year but the last time the Pirates went gaga over a half-year wonder, Nate McLouth got a bloated contract and he'll be out of the majors this year.

Unlike me, Scott is not pulling for salary caps for individual players and their MLB teams.

Pearce has much more upside than Overbay at a lower cost. How many gold gloves do you see Alvarez earning at third base over his career? Rendon will receive more.

arizona: Alvarez is a third baseman. If he shows well this spring, Pearce will get chances against left-handers. At 27, he's not a prospect. PL

PR: Overbay delays Alvarez moving to first base. I would also like to see more opportunity for a healthy Pearce. I want the money paid to Overbay to help resign McCutchen for a long term deal ASAP. southills: If you like the Royals player personnel feel free to jump and be their fan. I believe in the young core the Pirates have established.

arizona, the royals average age last year was 28.2 and the pirates 27.5. not that much of a difference.

Why pay Overbay all that money if the team will use him as a platoon player because he cannot bat well in all situations? We all know he will not be the difference in the Pirates making the playoffs. My on-going question to management is which organization was willing to pay him similar money that the Pirates agreed upon? We all know the Pirates are (minimum) 1 season away from competing. Why not try to give more opportunity to potential future core players?

sammyk: Did KC call up to the highest level the same future star caliber players that the Pirate organization did last season? Which organization player personnel would you prefer all under the age of 26 (Pirates or Royals)?

sammyk: Overbay is a defensive upgrade at first, and Jones is an offensive and defensive upgrade in right field. The question is, can Atkins or Pearce or someone else fill in capably against lefties at first base? If so, the offense should be much better. PL

So will Lyle Overbay be the next Jeremy Burnitz. Seems to be another Adam LaRoche at best. Good glove, struggles on one side of the plate, .250 hitter. Outside of defense is he any better as a hitter than Jones.

Just saw MLB's top prospect list for the year. Kansas City has 6 in the top 50 and Pittsburgh has 1. That's pitiful when you considere both teams have been drafting relatively in the same spot. And no the Pirates top prospect isn't Daniel Moskos.

One of the coolest part of Chuck was how he went against conventional wisdom. Putting Milner up after Nicosa was 5 for 5. Playing Teke in left field. Managers seem to be afraid of doing things like that in today's game.

I would like to read some additional shout outs for Chuck! They would be well deserved. He was the last MAN to lead this organization to the World Series. His players enjoyed playing under him. He had a great baseball mind.
